Ron Howard Reveals the ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Character Played by Clint Howard

Ron Howard grew up in show business. Not only was he a child star appearing in movies alongside his father Rance Howard, but he made a name for himself throughout his childhood, adolescence and early adult years as the co-star on shows like The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days, not to mention films like American Graffiti. Since then he’s gone on to become an acclaimed filmmaker nominated for countless awards. A little lesser known is his brother Clint Howard. Though the younger son of the Howard family appeared alongside his brother and father in many productions, he never quite became a certified star. But that hasn’t stopped him from carving out a nice career as one of the most recognizable character actors in… [Read More...]

Is Meryl Streep Going to Be Princess Leia?

Ever since Carrie Fisher died, there have been questions about how the role of Leia Organa would be handled in Star Wars: Episode Nine, especially after Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were killed off in the previous movies. Disney isn’t going to use special effects to put Fisher into the film like they did with Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One, so Leia will either be written out of the series or recast. Rumors have been spreading that Disney is thinking about casting Meryl Streep to replace Fisher as General Organa, seeing as how she’s Meryl Streep, she was friends with Carrie Fisher and played a character based on Fisher in Postcards From the Edge. And fans of the idea started a … [Read More...]

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Is Almost Done, But Will It Be Any Good?

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Is Almost Done, But Will It Be Any Good?

Star Wars was a great movie, and it launched a generation of fans for whom Star Wars was almost a religion. It also spawned two sequels which became as beloved as the original movie. And for nearly twenty years, fans wanted more Star Wars. The universe Lucas created, where space wizards with laser swords fought pitched battles of good vs evil using a mystical force that touches everything in the universe, was as big a reason for the success of Star Wars as the plot of the movies themselves. Eventually, Lucas gave fans the thing they’d been salivating for those two long decades, a second Star Wars trilogy, and fans quickly learned to be careful what they wish for. To say that the Star Wars prequels, … [Read More...]

Phil Lord & Christopher Miller Will Receive Executive Producer Credit on ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Ousted Star Wars directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are set to receive executive producer credit on the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. Last year, the duo was fired from the film midway through its production but will take the executive producer credit for the work they accomplished during early production. “We were really proud of the many contributions we made to that film. In light of the creative differences, we elected to take an executive producer credit,” the pair said during a recent festival. The partners were eventually replaced by Ron Howard, who reportedly re-shot a large amount of the film, leaving the question of who would be credited as director. Solo: A Star Wars Story is set to hit theaters on… [Read More...]

Steven Spielberg Regrets Replacing Guns With Walkie-Talkies In ‘E.T.,’ Vows Not To ‘Digitally Enhance’ Any Other Classics

Getty Image Steven Spielberg has been making the rounds to promote Ready Player One, including making an appearance at a well-reviewed SXSW screening and talking about Star Wars. Speaking of Star Wars, do you remember how much people lambasted the “digital enhancements” George Lucas added years later? Spielberg also went back and changed one of his classic movies using CGI. He removed guns from F.B.I. agents’ hands and replaced them with walkie-talkies. He now expresses regret for doing that, when asked by Screen Rant if he’s considered adding newer special effects to his older movies: Well, I got in trouble for doing that. When E.T. was re-released, I actually digitized 5 shots where E.T. went from being a puppet … [Read More...]

A ‘Star Wars’ Fan Imagines ‘The Force Awakens’ Ending If It Were Just A Few Seconds Longer

*Spoilers for The Last Jedi below* For two years, Star Wars fans wondered exactly how Luke Skywalker was going to react to Rey presenting his dad’s lightsaber to him on his island hideaway. Would the memories come rushing back, revitalizing his purpose and sending him heroically off to help his sister Leia and the resistance? No. Turns out he chucked the old, blue lightsaber over his shoulder and decided to march down to the beach where he could suck on some blue milk instead. The unexpected twist wrinkled plenty of fans, but Luke’s insistence that he was done fighting an unwinnable battle after inadvertently helping turn his nephew to the dark side. His time would now be spent with space nuns and learning how to… [Read More...]

Update: In a new interview, Steven Spielberg clarified his comments about being able to secure rights to Star Wars franchise so he could reference it in Ready Player One. Our original article follows, as well as video of Spielberg explaining how Lucasfilm cooperated after all. Ready Player One is jam-packed with references to the pop culture of yesteryear, but an early version of the script featured a huge shout-out to a certain 1977 sci-fi classic which director Steven Spielberg ended up cutting out. And it may not be from the movie you’re thinking about. Harrison Ford’s Reaction To This ‘Star Wars’ Question Is Pure Harrison Ford

Lucasfilm/Disney Harrison Ford is, once again, fresh out of f*cks to give. He’s on a farewell tour of sorts and saying whatever he pleases about his past roles. Soon we’ll be seeing someone else playing Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but that won’t make us stop picturing Ford in the role. (Would that it were so simple.) But what does Ford think about passing the torch to other Star Wars actors? He gave a blunt answer when asked by the New York Times if he viewed his tragic and meme-inspiring departure from the series as handing things off to John Boyega and the other younger actors. “I don’t know that I thought of it that way … [Read More...]

A ‘Star Wars’ Tradition Dating Back To The Original Movie Has Been Retired

LUCASFILM “I have a bad feeling about this” (or thereabouts). Lucky number 1138. “May the Force be with you.” These are the phrases and easter eggs that have been in every Star Wars movie, catnip for the hardcore fans. That was the case for the infamous Wilhelm scream, too, until the two most recent films. And now it’s been officially retired. The “Wilhelm scream” sound effect dates back to the otherwise forgotten 1951 film Distant Drums, when a solider is dragged underwater by an alligator in the Everglades. The painful noise he makes was re-used two years later in The Charge at Feather River, which is where the connection to Star Wars begins. While watching the movie, sound designer Ben Burtt took note… [Read More...]

Upcoming Book ‘Blonde, Beautiful, and Dead’ Explores the Murder Mystery that Inspired “Twin Peaks”

No, Laura Palmer wasn’t a real person, but the murder mystery at the center of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” was actually inspired by a real-life case. Story goes that co-creator Mark Frost was told about the 1908 murder of Hazel Irene Drew by his grandmother as a child, which ended up serving as the basis for “Twin Peaks.” David Bushman, a “Twin Peaks” mega fan and host of a podcast about the show, … [Read More...]

‘Tremors’ Star Michael Gross Has An Answer For Anyone Worried About Burt’s Gun Obsession

In 1990’s Tremors, Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) was a funny character. He and his then-wife Heather (Reba McEntire) had a stockpile of weapons. In one of the film’s funniest scenes, they unloaded their entire arsenal into a Graboid. 28 years later, guns are a much more complicated subject. Regardless of the political aspects, you don’t want to make insensitive jokes when there’s a mass shooting epidemic going on. Gross came up with a way to stay … [Read More...]

Colossus and the Amazon Queen (1960)

Colossus and the Amazon Queen (1960)

I’m rather fond of the peplum genre but it has to be said that on the whole these are movies that you don’t want to try to take too seriously. Mostly they’re enjoyable as silly fun. Colossus and the Amazon Queen (the original title is La regina delle Amazzoni) dates from 1960 and is slightly unusual in that it was intended from the word go as a comedic take on the genre. The dubbed version which hit the U.S. in 1964 pushes the comic elements even … [Read More...]

The Monster That Challenged the World, produced by Gramercy Pictures and released through United Artists, is essentially a stock-standard 1950s American monster movie, its main distinguishing feature being that it’s fairly competently executed. The U.S. Navy has a research establishment on the Salton Sea. They do all sorts of things there, including the testing of parachutes. Navy personnel make parachute jumps into the Salton Sea and are then … [Read More...]

Drácula (1931, the Spanish version)

In 1931 if you wanted to reach non-English speaking markets dubbing and subtitling were not options. You had to shoot a second version of the film. In 1931 Universal decided to shoot a Spanish language version of Dracula as well as the Tod Browning-directed English-language version, and to do the two films simultaneously, using the same sets. Browning shot his version during the day. At night George Melford and his crew shot the Spanish version. … [Read More...]

Dracula (1931)

I’ve seen Universal’s 1931 Dracula quite a few times and it’s never impressed me but since I now own it on Blu-Ray I thought I’d give it another try.Of course the biggest single problem with this movie is that it was so influential and has been imitated, quoted, homaged and parodied so many times. Everything about the movie became a horror movie cliché. What you have to keep always in mind is that in 1931 these were not clichés. At the time of … [Read More...]
